DNF – Did Not Finish, to put a book down before you read until the last page and never pick it up again.
It’s something that a lot of us can struggle with! Especially for us who make content online cause we feel like we need to read to the end to be able to properly talk about the book! I had thought that I was fine DNFing books. Reader, I am not.
I was reading Dark Places by Gillian Flynn recently, and I was bored as all hell. So bored. I skipped to the end to read what happened!!! And yet I couldn’t bring myself to DNF the damn thing. I kept thinking about how would I mark it in my bullet journal? Would I then have failed my tbr if it was a DNF? Does it still count as reading it? And so I read all the way to the end.
I will say that the end section was better than the 300 pages before it, but I still gave the book a lowwww 2*s and I probably would’ve been better off just not finishing it at all!
But I couldn’t bring myself to do it! Why not?!?! I really don’t know. It’s something I’m going to have to get better at cause I don’t want to read books I don’t like!
Let me know your DNFing tips!!
DNF tips? Skip to the ending hahaha. If I read the ending and I don’t feel any compulsion to find out WHY it happened, then I’m very likely to DNF. If I don’t even want to read the ending… I probably never made it past chapter 1

I count them as still being read because technically I’ve still read it – I’ve just not finished it. I don’t have a personal bullet journal (I use them for gaming) so I’m not sure what to do about that. Maybe use a specific colour or marking for it? It depends on what system you have in place. If you mark off in a block you could stripe it or X it, or use a bold colour like red or gold/silver to mark it off?
Personally, I use GoodReads for all my books so I have a did-not-finish shelf. You could make a separate page in your bullet journal for DNFs and have a place for date and month so that it can be used for the year, or if you prefer to have one for a month maybe incorporate a decorative box in your book spread for DNFs?
And now I think I’m rambling 😀 I’ll stop there 😉

I’ve been colouring each book according to their spine so I think it’d have to be something like an X! I always tend to think of them as books I’ve not read but really I should think about them as read books instead!
